I finally got down to this great little café a few weeks ago. It's just around the corner from Café Craft and has found its niche quite nicely in the trendy area of Canal Saint Martin (check out the Café Craft post for nice walks in the area). It was all there: a great name, Coutume beans, funky décor and a jolly bunch of smiling Australians to greet you. Promising stuff. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the price of everything on the menu (written in perfect Franglais). Coffee for 3 euros and a whole brunch deal for a mere 10, what a steal.
The interior of the café is pretty cosy, with about fifteen seats or so in total, a few of which are at communal tables. Don't be surprised if you have to shuffle around a bit while you're there to let other people by or to help accommodate a few more caffeine cravers. The three girls who run it are born and bred Australians, two from Queensland and one from Sydney. They opened the café about two months ago and used their collective creativity and vegetarian savoir-faire to put together a tasty menu and a great place to enjoy it in.
The cappuccino was a little milky, but good nevertheless. I now think I should have asked for a latte (or even a flat white, since this would have been understood by my fellow expatriated compatriot). The highlight of my Sunday afternoon brunching experience was definitely the croque-monsieur muffin. It contained avocado instead of ham (so deliciously un-French), was perfect in size and came accompanied by a pineapple-mint frappé and a crunchy cookie.
I had a quick chat to one of the co-owners of the café, who said that as they were in early stages of operation, they still had a bit of price analysis to do. I do hope their analysis concludes that the price is right and that no changes are necessary. We shall see.
There is wi-fi available. However, there was no bathroom when I was there, and I don't know how permanent this is, so just in case, make sure you satisfy any such needs before coming.
Very cool all round.
